If you choose to return your vehicle at the end of a Leadership Purchase Plan™ contract, you will be asked to arrange a vehicle inspection. The inspection is free and takes about an hour to complete. You can arrange to bring your vehicle to an inspection location, or an inspector will travel to a location convenient to you such as your home or work place.

Why an inspection is needed
The inspection gives you a portion of the information you will need to properly close your account. It's important to set up your appointment and have the inspection completed in the last two scheduled months of your Leadership Purchase Plan™ term.

When returning your vehicle, you are responsible for any excess wear and use and this may be charged to your account. It's a good idea to be aware of any charges before turning in your vehicle. That way, when you receive a bill for these conditions, you'll understand what's involved. Having the inspection done well in advance of returning your vehicle also gives you time to take care of any needed repairs yourself.

What's covered in the inspection
The vehicle inspection covers three major areas of your vehicle: the body, including the tires; the interior; and the engine. The inspector may take your vehicle for a short test drive and will examine approximately 150 components. These may include:
  • Transmission

  • Power components (windows, antenna, steering, locks, etc.)

  • Wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension

  • Paint, body and frame

  • Seats, upholstery, and carpets

  • Airbags and restraint systems (seatbelts)

  • Lights (turn signals, brakes, headlights)

  • Climate control and defogger

We recommend that you be present for the inspection. If you are present, the inspector will give you a copy of the report following the inspection. No charges will be made to your account until after the vehicle has been turned in.

How to schedule an inspection
The Lease Maturity Center can direct you to the vehicle inspection facility in your area. You should arrange for an inspection about two months prior to the end of your contract. You can arrange to bring your vehicle to an inspection location, or an inspector will travel to a location convenient to you such as your home or workplace.

Wear and use: normal vs. excessive
The criteria for reasonable wear and use depend on the length of your contract. In general, the shorter the contract, the better condition your vehicle is expected to be in. Some of these conditions are described in your contract. For example, one small ding on a body panel is considered to be normal wear and use. However, should the paint surface be broken, or the panel exhibit several dings, this may be defined as excess wear and use.

Remember, we don't expect your vehicle to be in the exact condition it was in when you bought it. Some wear and use is expected. Your inspector follows rigid standards for determining normal and excessive conditions.

The Self Inspection Reference Card acts as a helpful reference guide for you to estimate potential excess wear and use damage areas prior to your vehicle end inspection. Please note that this is simply a helpful tool to judge potential damage. Actual wear and use damage charges will be determined during the inspection process.

Making repairs
If the vehicle requires repairs resulting from excess wear and use, you may arrange to have them completed yourself. We encourage you to use an authorized Honda or Acura facility to ensure that the vehicle is properly repaired with genuine Honda or Acura parts. Please be sure to save all repair receipts, as they will be required at vehicle return.

If you prefer, you may instead return the vehicle without making repairs, in which case you will receive a bill for the cost of excess wear and use after your vehicle is turned in. Again, no charges will be made to your account until the vehicle is turned in.
